The #176 "Bakep" error: the back header reads "EUGENF W. BAKEP," the whole name garbled on the printing plate. It is the ONLY error Topps corrected in 1957, which is why the error back carries the premium — a PSA population near 215, topping out at PSA 8.
About Johnny Temple
A scrappy leadoff man and one of the National League's premier second basemen of the 1950s, Johnny Temple signed with Cincinnati out of a 1948 Mooresville, North Carolina tryout camp for $150 a month and hit .316 at Class D Morganton — the stop this card's back famously misspells as "Morgantown," an uncorrected error. Debuting in 1952, he paired with shortstop Roy McMillan in one of the NL's finest double-play combinations and showed a sharp batting eye, retiring with a .284 average and far more walks (648) than strikeouts (338). Temple played in six All-Star Games (1956, 1957, 1959, 1961) — the 1957 nod came amid Cincinnati fans' notorious ballot-stuffing that elected nearly the entire Redlegs lineup — and he became the first second baseman to appear in the All-Star Game for both leagues. He peaked at .311 with 102 runs in 1959, later played for Cleveland, Baltimore, and Houston, and — famously fiery — once decked a Cincinnati sportswriter. The Reds inducted him into their team Hall of Fame in 1965.
