1957 Topps #66 Brooks Lawrence

About Brooks Lawrence
Brooks Ulysses Lawrence (1925–2000) came out of Springfield, Ohio, served in the Army during World War II, and pitched at Miami University before signing into Cleveland's farm system. Drafted by St. Louis, he and Bill Greason integrated the Cardinals' Triple-A Columbus club in 1954; called up that June at age 29, he beat Pittsburgh in his debut and finished 15-6 as a rookie. Cardinals manager Eddie Stanky dubbed him 'The Bull' for his powerful presence on the mound. Traded to Cincinnati, Lawrence opened 1956 with 13 consecutive wins — a Reds record — made the National League All-Star team, and finished 19-10, denied a shot at 20 when manager Birdie Tebbetts shelved him down the stretch. This card caught him at his peak: he won 16 more in 1957. He retired in 1960 at 69-62 with 481 strikeouts, later worked for the Reds' front office, and entered the Reds Hall of Fame in 1976.
