1957 Topps #103 Joe Nuxhall

About Joe Nuxhall
No big leaguer has ever debuted younger. With World War II thinning rosters, Cincinnati signed 15-year-old Joe Nuxhall in February 1944 — scouts had originally come to watch his father — and on June 10, 1944, at 15 years, 316 days, he pitched two-thirds of an inning against St. Louis, walking five and giving up a single to Stan Musial. Back to stay by 1952, the lefty blossomed into a two-time All-Star (1955-56), leading the NL with five shutouts in 1955 while going 42-28 from 1954-56 — the peak this Redlegs card captures. After detours to Kansas City (1961) and the Angels (1962), he returned to Cincinnati and pitched through 1966, finishing 135-117 with 1,372 strikeouts. As "The Ol' Left-hander," he called Reds radio from 1967 to 2004, signing off with "rounding third and heading for home." A Reds Hall of Famer (1968), he is honored with a statue outside Great American Ball Park.
