About Ed Bailey
Lonas Edgar Bailey Jr. — "Gar," short for his middle name, though teammate Jim Brosnan joked it stood for "garrulous" — spurned the Yankees to sign with Cincinnati for a bonus reported as high as $35,000. After two Army years at Fort Jackson, the Strawberry Plains, Tennessee, catcher debuted in September 1953 and broke out in 1956, batting .300 with 28 home runs and starting the All-Star Game for a Redlegs lineup that slugged 221 homers. This card caught him at that peak, mid-run of five All-Star seasons (1956-57, 1960-61, 1963). In 1959 he and pitcher Jim Bailey formed a rare big-league brother battery; traded to San Francisco in 1961, his lone 1962 World Series hit was a ninth-inning Game 3 homer off the Yankees, and he caught Juan Marichal's 1963 no-hitter. He finished with 155 home runs in 1,212 games, later serving twelve years on Knoxville's city council, and died in 2007 at 75.
