About Saul Rogovin
Brooklyn's Saul Rogovin broke into pro ball in 1941, and after umpire Dolly Stark steered him into the New York Giants organization, coach Red Lucas converted the position player into a pitcher at Chattanooga. He debuted with Detroit in 1949, and a 1951 trade to the White Sox for Bob Cain sparked his career year: a combined 12-8 record and an American League-best 2.78 ERA. A genuine sleep disorder left him famously dozing in the Comiskey Park dugout. He went 14-9 in 1952, resurfaced with Baltimore in 1955, then joined the Phillies that same year, going 5-3 with a 3.08 ERA. This card captures his final season — four appearances in 1957 closed out a 48-48, 4.06 ERA career. Rogovin later earned an English degree from City College of New York (his own bubble-gum card got a phys-ed requirement waived) and taught high-school English in New York, saying teaching finally filled the void baseball left.
