About Bob Miller
A Detroit native and World War II Army veteran of the Pacific, right-hander Bob Miller signed with the Phillies in 1948, won 19 games at Class B Terre Haute, and debuted in September 1949. As a 1950 Whiz Kids rookie he won his first eight decisions and finished 11-6 with a 3.57 ERA for the pennant winners, runner-up to Sam Jethroe for NL Rookie of the Year. A back injury from lugging suitcases at a train station that June sapped his stuff, and his Game 4 World Series start against the Yankees lasted just one out. Still, he spent all ten big-league seasons (1949-58) in Philadelphia, going 42-42 in 261 games — and on August 9, 1953, he shut out the Cubs while going 4-for-5 at the plate. This 1957 Topps card catches him near the end of that run. He later coached the University of Detroit for 36 seasons, winning 896 games, and entered the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.
