About Willie Jones

Willie Edward "Puddin' Head" Jones (1925-1983) was a slick-fielding third baseman signed by Phillies scout Johnny Nee in late 1946, after starring for the semipro Bennettsville Red Sox in South Carolina. His nickname traced to a popular novelty song of the era, "Wooden Head, Puddin' Head Jones." Debuting with Philadelphia in 1947, he became the everyday third baseman in 1949 and held the job through 1959, later finishing with Cleveland and Cincinnati (1959-1961). A two-time All-Star (1950, 1951), Jones enjoyed his best year with the 1950 "Whiz Kids" pennant winners, posting career highs of 25 home runs, 88 RBIs, 100 runs and 163 hits, then batting .286 in a World Series the Yankees swept. Renowned for his glove, he led NL third basemen in fielding average five straight years (1952-1956) and again in 1958. Over 15 seasons he hit .258 with 190 home runs and 812 RBIs. Before Mike Schmidt, he was regarded as the finest third baseman in Phillies history and is enshrined on the club's Wall of Fame.
