About Curt Simmons
Curt Simmons was a hard-throwing left-hander who signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1947 for a $65,000 bonus, one of the highest of the postwar "bonus baby" era. Alongside Robin Roberts, he anchored the 1950 "Whiz Kids," the young Phillies club that captured the National League pennant; Simmons went 17-8 that year but was declared ineligible for the World Series after his National Guard unit was called up for the Korean War, and he missed all of 1951 on military duty. He returned in 1952 to go 14-8 with a 2.82 ERA and led the majors with six shutouts, the first of three All-Star selections (1952, 1953, 1957). Traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, he won 18 games in 1964 and finally reached the World Series, throwing eight strong innings of four-hit ball in Game 3. Over 20 seasons he went 193-183 with a 3.54 ERA and 36 shutouts. Hank Aaron credited Simmons's deceptive, body-turning delivery for making him tough to hit.
