1957 Topps #224 Marv Blaylock

About Marv Blaylock
Marv Blaylock, a left-handed-hitting first baseman from Fort Smith, Arkansas, signed with the New York Giants in 1947 and debuted as a pinch hitter on September 26, 1950 — his only game for New York. After four more seasons in the minors he resurfaced with the Philadelphia Phillies, appearing in 113 games in 1955 and enjoying his best year in 1956, when he started 110 games at first base, batted .254, and ranked fourth on the team with ten home runs. This card caught him at that peak; in 1957 he lost the job to rookie Ed Bouchee and was sent to Triple-A. He made his final big-league at-bat unforgettable, though — a pinch-hit home run off Brooklyn's René Valdés in an 8–4 loss at Connie Mack Stadium on September 28, 1957. Blaylock finished at .235 with 15 home runs in 287 games; he died in Conway, Arkansas, in 1993.
