Joe Lonnett - 1957 Topps #241
1957 Topps #241 Joe Lonnett

About Joe Lonnett
A Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania native, Joe Lonnett signed with the Phillies in 1948 as an outfielder before a minor-league conversion to catcher launched a baseball life that spanned nearly fifty years. After Korean War Army service — playing service ball at Fort Eustis alongside Willie Mays — he reached Philadelphia in 1956 and caught four seasons (1956-59), batting .166 with six home runs in 143 games. This card is his Topps rookie, issued during his busiest year: in 1957 he logged a career-high 160 at-bats, hit his first big-league homer in a July 4 doubleheader sweep of the Giants, and added an inside-the-park shot at Wrigley Field. His larger legacy came as third-base coach for western Pennsylvania friend Chuck Tanner with the White Sox, A's, and Pirates (1971-84), winning a World Series ring with the 1979 "We Are Family" Pirates and mentoring catchers Brian Downing, Ed Ott, and Steve Nicosia. Nicknamed "Fred Flintstone" for his uncanny resemblance to the cartoon character, he died in 2011 at 84.
