About Tom Acker
A towering 6-foot-4 right-hander from Paterson, New Jersey, Tom Acker signed with the New York Giants out of Fair Lawn High School in 1948 after going 9–0 with 102 strikeouts in 63 innings as a senior. Drafted into the Army in October 1951, he missed the 1952–53 seasons, then broke in with the Cincinnati Redlegs on April 20, 1956 — a rookie year of 4–3 with a 2.37 ERA, capped by his only career shutout against Philadelphia that September. This card arrived during his finest season: in 1957 the big swingman went 10–5 in 49 games (ninth in the NL), a .667 winning percentage that would have ranked third in the league had he qualified. All four of his big-league seasons (1956–59) came in Cincinnati, totaling 19–13 with a 4.12 ERA and 256 strikeouts. Later a longtime Meadowlands Racetrack employee, he entered the Fair Lawn Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006 and died in 2021 at age 90. Card #219 is his Topps rookie card.
