About Jackie Jensen
Universally called 'The Golden Boy,' Jackie Jensen (1927–1982) was a consensus All-America halfback at California who scored a touchdown in the 1949 Rose Bowl, then signed with the Pacific Coast League's Oakland Oaks. Sold to the Yankees in 1950 — he pinch-ran in that fall's World Series sweep of the Phillies — he went to Washington in 1952 in a deal Casey Stengel called his worst, then to Boston in December 1953. In right field the Red Sox got the AL's premier run producer: league leader in steals (1954), triples (1956), and RBIs three times (1955, 1958, 1959), 1958 MVP on 35 homers and 122 RBIs, and a 1959 Gold Glover. This card captures his 23-homer, 103-RBI 1957, the year Norman Rockwell painted him into The Rookie. A paralyzing fear of flying drove the three-time All-Star into retirement at 32; after a one-season comeback in 1961 he finished with 199 homers and 929 RBIs — the first man to play in the Rose Bowl, the World Series, and the All-Star Game.
