About Milt Bolling

Milt Bolling spent parts of seven seasons in the majors but nearly a half-century in baseball. Signed by legendary Red Sox scout George Digby out of Mobile, Alabama in 1948, the right-handed shortstop debuted in Boston on September 10, 1952, and took over the position in 1953, hitting a career-best .263 as a rookie. Injuries dogged him — a 1953 ankle tear altered his throwing, and a severe elbow injury in spring training 1955 limited him to six games. This card caught him at a crossroads: on April 29, 1957, Boston traded him to Washington with Russ Kemmerer and Faye Throneberry for Dean Stone and Bob Chakales. Dealt on to Detroit in 1958, he briefly joined brother Frank, the Tigers' second baseman, forming one of only four brother keystone combinations in big-league history. After 400 games, a .241 average, and 19 homers, Bolling returned to the Red Sox as Tom Yawkey's executive assistant and a scout, signing Tony Conigliaro and George Scott across 43 years with the organization. He died in 2013.
