About Frank Robinson

Signed off the Oakland sandlots by Reds scout Bobby Mattick for $3,500 in 1953, Frank Robinson exploded onto the National League in 1956, hitting .290 with 38 home runs — tying Wally Berger's rookie record — to win Rookie of the Year unanimously; this card, the key first-series rookie of the 1957 set, captures that arrival. He starred in Cincinnati's outfield through 1965, winning the 1961 NL MVP (.323, 37 HR, 124 RBI) while driving the Reds to the pennant. Dealt to Baltimore after owner Bill DeWitt dismissed him as "not a young 30," he answered with the 1966 Triple Crown (.316, 49, 122), AL MVP, and World Series MVP in a sweep of the Dodgers, adding another title in 1970. Nicknamed "The Judge" for presiding over the Orioles' kangaroo court in robe and mop wig, the 14-time All-Star retired with 586 homers and 2,943 hits, became baseball's first Black manager with Cleveland in 1975 — homering in his first at-bat — and entered the Hall of Fame in 1982.
