1957 Topps #104 Hank Foiles

About Hank Foiles
A multi-sport standout from Norfolk, Virginia, Hank Foiles signed with the New York Yankees in 1947, reached the majors with Cincinnati in 1953, and caught for seven clubs through 1964, including the Indians, Athletics, Tigers, Orioles, and Angels. His best years came in Pittsburgh, where he arrived in a May 1956 trade for Preston Ward and was the Pirates' regular catcher when this card appeared. In 1957 he posted career highs — 76 hits, a .270 average, nine home runs — and made the National League All-Star team, pinch-hitting a ninth-inning single off Billy Pierce and scoring as the NL rallied before falling 6-5. Foiles is credited as the first major leaguer to wear contact lenses (one famously popped out mid-game during spring training), and he later filed a $7 million lawsuit against the Orioles over the use of his likeness on promotional baseball cards. A .243 hitter with 46 home runs in 608 games, he entered the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1987 and died in 2024 at age 94.
