1957 Topps #140 Frank Thomas

About Frank Thomas
Frank Joseph Thomas (1929-2023) was a slugging outfielder, third baseman, and first baseman who signed with his hometown Pittsburgh Pirates and reached the majors on August 17, 1951, at Forbes Field. A right-handed power hitter, he broke through with 30 home runs and 102 RBIs in his first full season in 1953 and earned National League All-Star selections in 1954, 1955, and 1958. His finest year came in 1958, when he set career highs of 35 home runs and 109 RBIs and started the All-Star Game at third base, which Thomas called his proudest accomplishment because the players chose the starters; that August he hit three consecutive home runs against Cincinnati. After his 1951-1958 run in Pittsburgh, he played for the Reds, Cubs, Braves, Mets, Phillies, and Astros. As an original 1962 New York Met, he powered the expansion club with 34 home runs. Over 16 seasons he batted .266 with 286 home runs and 962 RBIs across 1,766 games. This card captures him mid-career as a Pirates cornerstone.
