About Chico Carrasquel
Alfonso "Chico" Carrasquel starred for Cervecería Caracas before the Brooklyn Dodgers signed him and then sold him to the White Sox, where he debuted in 1950 and hit .282 as a rookie. In 1951 he made history as the first Latin American player voted to start an All-Star Game, beating out reigning AL MVP Phil Rizzuto, and that season set a record by handling 297 consecutive chances without an error. A four-time All-Star (1951, 1953-55) called "El Gato de Venezuela" — the Cat of Venezuela — for his graceful fielding, he was traded with Jim Busby to Cleveland for Larry Doby in October 1955, clearing shortstop for the countryman he had helped recruit, Luis Aparicio. This card shows him in his second Indians season, the year he collected his 1,000th career hit. Venezuela's first big-league star and an idol to Aparicio, Concepción, Guillén, and Vizquel, he entered the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame's inaugural class in 2003.
