About Ray Crone

Ray Crone, a lanky right-hander from Memphis who threw five no-hitters as a schoolboy, signed with the Boston Braves in 1949 at age 17. He broke out with Jacksonville in 1953, winning 19 games with a 2.38 ERA alongside a 19-year-old Hank Aaron. Crone debuted with Milwaukee in April 1954 and won his first big-league start with a ten-inning complete game against the Cubs. His best season came in 1956: 11 wins and a 3.46 ERA. This card catches him in his final weeks as a Brave — on June 15, 1957, Milwaukee sent Crone, Danny O'Connell, and Bobby Thomson to the New York Giants for Red Schoendienst, a deal that cost Crone a share of the Braves' 1957 World Series championship. He pitched for the last Giants team in New York and the first in San Francisco, finishing 30-30 with a 3.87 ERA. Crone later scouted for the Expos, Orioles, Padres, and Diamondbacks, earning Midwest Scout of the Year honors in 2006, and died in January 2026 at age 94.
