About Gene Conley
Donald Eugene "Gene" Conley, a 6-foot-8 right-hander from Muskogee, Oklahoma, and a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, signed with the Boston Braves in 1950 and became the first player to win The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year award twice (1951 at Hartford, 1953 at Toledo). He pitched for the Braves (1952, 1954-58), Phillies (1959-60), and Red Sox (1961-63), finishing 91-96 with a 3.82 ERA and 888 strikeouts. A three-time All-Star (1954, 1955, 1959), he won the 1955 All-Star Game by striking out Al Kaline, Mickey Vernon, and Al Rosen in the twelfth inning before Stan Musial's walk-off homer. This card pictures him in 1957, the year he won nine games and pitched in relief as Milwaukee captured the World Series. Conley also won three straight NBA titles with the Boston Celtics (1959-61) — still the only athlete with championships in both MLB and the NBA — and famously walked off a stalled Red Sox team bus in 1962 intending to fly to Jerusalem. He died in 2017.
