About Whitey Herzog
Dorrel “Whitey” Herzog signed with the Yankees out of New Athens, Illinois, in 1949, picking up his nickname from a minor-league sportscaster in McAlester, Oklahoma, who thought his light-blond hair recalled Yankees pitcher Bob “White Rat” Kuzava. Dealt to Washington, he debuted in 1956 and patrolled the Senators’ outfield until a May 1958 sale to Kansas City; stops with the Athletics, Orioles, and Tigers rounded out a modest playing line of .257 with 25 home runs across 634 games. His genius surfaced in the dugout: “Whiteyball” — speed, pitching, and defense — carried the Royals to three straight AL West titles (1976-78) and the Cardinals to the 1982 World Series championship over Milwaukee plus pennants in 1985 and 1987, earning 1985 NL Manager of the Year honors and 2010 Hall of Fame induction.
