1957 Topps #169 Herb Plews

Washington Senators · American League · Series 2 (#89-176) · 2nd base
Rookie CardErrorUER

Uncorrected error: Born in '28, not '29. It was never corrected, so there is only one version of the card.

The #176 "Bakep" error: the back header reads "EUGENF W. BAKEP," the whole name garbled on the printing plate. It is the ONLY error Topps corrected in 1957, which is why the error back carries the premium — a PSA population near 215, topping out at PSA 8.

About Herb Plews

Herbert Eugene Plews (June 14, 1928 - December 12, 2014) was a second baseman born in East Helena, Montana. He starred at the University of Illinois, where he was voted Illini baseball MVP as a sophomore in 1948, then signed with the New York Yankees upon graduating in 1950. After minor-league seasons interrupted by U.S. Army service during the Korean War (1951-1953), his contract went to the Washington Senators, and he debuted on April 18, 1956, driving in a run as a pinch-hitter. Plews spent 1956-1959 with Washington, splitting time at second and third base, and finished his brief run with a June 1959 trade to the Boston Red Sox. Over 346 big-league games he batted .262 with 266 hits, 4 home runs, and 82 RBIs. At his death he was the only ballplayer from the Helena area to reach the majors. This 1957 Topps issue is his Topps rookie card; a printing error lists his birth year as 1929 rather than 1928.
