About Jose Valdivielso

Signed out of Matanzas, Cuba, in 1953 by famed Senators scout Joe Cambria — his mother had to ink the contract because José was only 17 — Valdivielso began his pro career with the Lubbock Hubbers of the West Texas-New Mexico League. The lanky shortstop debuted with Washington on June 21, 1955, collected two singles and a double off Whitey Ford in his first game in New York, and drew a down-ballot MVP vote as a rookie. Over five big-league seasons with the Senators and Minnesota Twins (1955-56, 1959-61) he hit .219 with 213 hits in 401 games; in 1960 he was Washington's most-used shortstop, starting 92 games before ceding the job to fellow Cuban Zoilo Versalles. That July 23 he recorded the final out of an all-Cuban triple play — Pedro Ramos to Julio Becquer to Valdivielso. This card appeared while he was back in the minors between Washington stints. He later became a Spanish-language broadcaster for the Yankees and Mets, and died March 4, 2025, at age 90.
