About Turk Lown

Omar Joseph "Turk" Lown — nicknamed as a boy for his fondness for eating turkey — took a hard road to the big leagues. Signed by Brooklyn out of a 1942 Ebbets Field tryout, the Brooklyn-born right-hander served as an Army infantryman in World War II, taking shrapnel in the thigh at the Battle of the Bulge and earning a Purple Heart. Drafted by the Cubs in November 1950, he debuted in 1951 and remade himself as a reliever, leading the NL with 67 appearances in 1957 — the season this card hit shelves. After a brief 1958 stop in Cincinnati, he landed with the White Sox and peaked with the 1959 pennant winners, going 9-2 with a league-best 15 saves alongside bullpen partner Gerry Staley and tossing 3⅓ scoreless World Series innings. He finished 55-61 with 73 saves in 504 games, then delivered mail in Pueblo, Colorado, for 23 years.
