Jim Finigan - 1957 Topps #248
1957 Topps #248 Jim Finigan

About Jim Finigan
Jim Finigan came out of Quincy, Illinois, signed into the Yankees system, and lost two seasons to Army service during the Korean War before reaching the majors — via the eleven-player Vic Power trade that sent him to the Philadelphia Athletics in December 1953. His 1954 rookie year was superb: a .302 average, an All-Star nod, a Sporting News All-Rookie selection alongside Hank Aaron and Ernie Banks, and runner-up to Bob Grim for AL Rookie of the Year. In 1955 he out-polled Al Rosen to start the All-Star Game at third base and homered in the Kansas City A's inaugural game. Dealt to Detroit in December 1956 in the Ned Garver trade, he hit .270 as a part-time third baseman in 1957 — his lone Tiger season, captured on this card. He finished with the Giants and Orioles, batting .264 over six seasons, and died in 1981 at 52 in his hometown, where he was set to become Quincy College's athletic director.
