1957 Topps #125 Al Kaline
Al Kaline, coming off back-to-back .300 seasons for Detroit at age 22.
About Al Kaline
Al Kaline signed with the Detroit Tigers straight out of Baltimore's Southern High School in 1953 for a $15,000 bonus, and under baseball's bonus-baby rules went directly to the majors — he never played a minor-league game. In 1955, at 20, he hit .340 to become the youngest batting champion in history, edging Ty Cobb's 1907 mark by a single day; he followed with .314 and a career-high 128 RBIs in 1956. This card catches him at 22, coming off those back-to-back .300 seasons — and 1957 brought the first of his 10 Gold Gloves in right field. Over 22 seasons, all in Detroit (1953–1974), “Mr. Tiger” — so called for his lifelong association with the club — earned 18 All-Star selections, hit .379 with two homers in the Tigers' 1968 World Series win over St. Louis, and retired with 3,007 hits and 399 home runs. Detroit retired his No. 6 in 1980, the year he entered the Hall of Fame on the first ballot.
