About Charlie Maxwell
Charles Richard Maxwell signed with the Red Sox in 1947 and won the 1949 Piedmont League Triple Crown at Roanoke, hitting .345 with 29 homers and 112 RBI, but struggled for a foothold in Boston. His break came when Detroit purchased his contract from Baltimore in May 1955: the left-handed-hitting left fielder blossomed in 1956, batting .326 with 28 home runs — then a Tigers record for lefty batters — and made the All-Star team in 1956 and 1957, the season this card hit packs. Fans called him Paw Paw for the Michigan village where he built his home, and Sunday Charlie after he hit 40 of his 148 career homers on Sundays — including four consecutive blasts in a May 3, 1959 doubleheader sweep of the Yankees. He posted a career-high 31 homers that year, retired in 1964 with a .264 average and 532 RBI across four AL clubs, and entered the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. He died in December 2024 at 97.
