About Jim Lemon
James Robert Lemon signed with Cleveland out of Covington, Virginia, and went by "Jim" so nobody would confuse him with Indians pitcher Bob Lemon. After brief trials in 1950 and 1953 sandwiched around Army service, Washington bought the 6-foot-4 outfielder for a reported $20,000 in May 1954 — and got a slugger. In 1956 he hit 27 home runs, led the American League with 11 triples, and on August 31 belted three straight homers off Whitey Ford at Griffith Stadium, becoming a favorite of President Eisenhower, who was in the stands that day. This card arrived on the heels of that breakout. A free swinger who led the AL in strikeouts three times, Lemon peaked with 33 homers in 1959 and an All-Star 1960 of 38 home runs and 100 RBIs. He retired in 1963 with 164 career home runs, managed the Senators in 1968, and died in 2006 at 78.
