1957 Topps #177 Eddie Yost

About Eddie Yost
Eddie Yost, born October 13, 1926, in Brooklyn, was one of the rare players who never spent a day in the minors. He signed with the Washington Senators in 1944 and debuted on August 16, 1944, at age 17, before serving in the U.S. Navy. Returning in 1947, he became Washington's regular third baseman through 1958, later playing for the Detroit Tigers (1959-1960) and Los Angeles Angels (1961-1962). Nicknamed "The Walking Man" for his extraordinary ability to draw bases on balls, Yost led the American League in walks six times and retired with 1,614 career walks, still among the game's all-time leaders. He was named to the 1952 All-Star team, and in 1959 with Detroit he led the AL with 115 runs and 135 walks while hitting a career-best 21 home runs. After playing, he coached third base for the New York Mets, earning a ring with the 1969 "Miracle Mets" World Series champions and reaching the 1973 National League pennant.
