About Pete Runnels
James Edward "Pete" Runnels — his family called him "Little Pete" after his father, and the name stuck — served in the Marines from 1945 to 1948, then signed with Chickasha of the Class D Sooner League in 1949. After he hit .372 there and .330 at Texarkana, the Washington Senators bought his contract for $12,500; he debuted in July 1951. This card catches the versatile infielder at a Senators low ebb: fresh off a .310, 76-RBI 1956, he slumped to a career-worst .230 in 1957 and was traded to Boston that winter. Batting ahead of tutor Ted Williams, he lost the 1958 batting race to Williams, .328 to .322, then won American League batting titles in 1960 (.320) and 1962 (.326), earned All-Star selections in 1959, 1960, and 1962, and tied a major-league record with nine hits in an August 30, 1960 doubleheader. He retired with a .291 average and 1,854 hits, managed the Red Sox for 16 games in 1966, and entered their team Hall of Fame in 2004.
