About Duke Snider

Edwin Donald "Duke" Snider signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers out of a Long Beach, California tryout camp and began his professional career in 1944 in the Class B Piedmont League at Newport News. A center fielder, he reached Brooklyn in 1947 and spent sixteen of his eighteen seasons with the Dodgers before finishing with the Mets (1963) and Giants (1964). An eight-time All-Star, Snider hit 40 or more home runs in five straight seasons (1953-1957), led the National League with 43 homers in 1956, and paced the NL in RBIs in 1955. That October he hit four home runs in the World Series as Brooklyn won its only title. Nicknamed "Duke" by his father for his self-assured swagger, the "Duke of Flatbush" retired with 407 home runs, 2,116 hits, and a .295 average, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1980. This 1957 card captures Brooklyn's final season: Snider was the last player to homer at Ebbets Field, hitting two off Robin Roberts on September 22, 1957.
