About Randy Jackson
Ransom Joseph "Randy" Jackson (1926-2019), born in Little Rock, Arkansas, was a college football halfback at TCU and Texas before Cubs scout Jimmy Payton arranged a Wrigley Field tryout; Chicago signed him in October 1947. After hitting his way up the minors, the third baseman debuted in 1950 and became the Cubs' regular at the hot corner, earning back-to-back All-Star selections in 1954 and 1955. Nicknamed "Handsome Ransom" by Des Moines Register sportswriter Sec Taylor during his 1948 minor-league season, Jackson was traded to Brooklyn in December 1955 to help replace the aging Jackie Robinson at third base, and he reached the 1956 World Series, appearing as a pinch-hitter. He hit the final home run in Brooklyn Dodgers history, a three-run shot off Don Cardwell on September 28, 1957. Over parts of ten seasons with the Cubs, Dodgers, and Indians he batted .261 with 103 home runs and 415 RBIs.
