About Don Drysdale
Don Drysdale signed with the Dodgers out of Van Nuys High School for a $4,000 bonus and debuted in Brooklyn in April 1956, going 5-5 with a 2.64 ERA at 19 — making this card #18 his rookie card, one of the 1957 set's premier rookies. Nicknamed “Big D” for his imposing 6-foot-5 frame, the sidearming right-hander owned the inside corner, hitting 154 batters, a modern NL record. In 14 seasons (1956-69), all with the Dodgers, he made nine All-Star teams, won the 1962 Cy Young Award at 25-9 with a league-leading 232 strikeouts, and helped win three World Series (1959, 1963, 1965), throwing a three-hit shutout in Game 3 of the 1963 sweep. In 1968 he fired a record 58⅔ consecutive scoreless innings, including six straight shutouts. He finished 209-166 with 2,486 strikeouts, became a longtime broadcaster, and entered the Hall of Fame in 1984.
