1957 Topps #4 Johnny Logan

About Johnny Logan
Fiery Milwaukee Braves shortstop Johnny Logan signed with the Boston Braves organization in 1947 for $2,500 after Army service, debuted in 1951, and took over as the club's everyday shortstop in 1952, leading NL shortstops in fielding three straight seasons. A four-time All-Star (1955, 1957-59), he led the National League with 37 doubles in 1955. This card captures him entering his finest year: in 1957 Logan scored the pennant-clinching run on September 23, then hit the World Series' first home run in Game 2 as Milwaukee toppled the Yankees, and the Braves repeated as NL champions in 1958. Nicknamed "Yatcha," from the Russian-Croatian "yah-shoo" that neighbors in Endicott, New York, used to quiet the rowdy kid, Logan never backed down from a fight, quipping of teammate Eddie Mathews, "I'd start the fight; Eddie would finish it." He finished with 1,407 hits and a .268 average, and after a 1964 season with Japan's Nankai Hawks became the first man to win both a World Series and a Japan Series.
