1957 Topps #37 Frank Torre

About Frank Torre
A Brooklyn native and the older brother of Hall of Famer Joe Torre, Frank Torre signed with the Boston Braves organization and, after 14 months of Army service in Korea, debuted with Milwaukee in April 1956. The slick-fielding left-handed first baseman led National League first basemen in fielding percentage in both 1957 and 1958. When Joe Adcock went down with a leg injury in June 1957, Torre took over first base for the pennant-winning Braves — scoring six runs in a September 2 rout of the Cubs to tie a modern record — then hit .300 with two home runs in the seven-game World Series upset of the Yankees. He posted career highs with a .309 average, six homers, and 55 RBIs in 1958 and finished with the Phillies in 1962-63. In 1996, the night before Joe's Yankees clinched the World Series, Frank underwent a heart transplant, and he spent his later years championing organ donation. This card captures him entering his championship season.
