Early Wynn - 1957 Topps #40
1957 Topps #40 Early Wynn

About Early Wynn
Signed by the Washington Senators at 17 after scout Clyde Milan spotted him at a 1937 tryout camp in Sanford, Florida, Early Wynn debuted in 1939 and pitched 23 big-league seasons. In Cleveland (1949-57) he anchored a legendary rotation with Bob Feller, Bob Lemon, and Mike Garcia, winning an AL-best 23 games for the record 111-win 1954 pennant team. A nine-time All-Star with five 20-win seasons, Wynn owned the inside corner, famously growling that he'd "knock down my own grandmother if she dug in on me." Weeks after this card's 1957 season ended, Cleveland dealt him and Al Smith to the White Sox for Minnie Miñoso; at 39 he won the 1959 Cy Young Award, his league-leading 22 wins powering Chicago to its first pennant since 1919. Back in Cleveland in 1963, he finally collected win No. 300 — his last — retiring at 300-244 with 2,334 strikeouts. The Hall of Fame called in 1972.
