Bill Skowron - 1957 Topps #135
1957 Topps #135 Bill Skowron

About Bill Skowron
William Joseph "Moose" Skowron (1930-2012) earned his nickname as a boy when a haircut left him resembling Benito Mussolini; friends' shout of "Mussolini" was shortened to "Moose." A .500-hitting standout at Purdue, he signed with the New York Yankees in 1950 and starred in the minors, winning The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year in 1952 after leading the American Association with 31 homers and 134 RBIs at Kansas City. The powerfully built first baseman debuted in 1954 and anchored the Yankees through 1962, later playing for the Dodgers, Senators, White Sox and Angels. An eight-time All-Star, Skowron won five World Series titles, four with the Yankees (1956, 1958, 1961, 1962) and one with the 1963 Dodgers. He hit a decisive three-run homer off Lew Burdette in Game 7 of the 1958 Series and batted .375 in 1960, and in 1961 formed the "three M's" (Mantle, Maris, Moose). He retired with a .282 average, 211 home runs and 888 RBIs.
