1957 Topps #87 Tom Gorman
Uncorrected error: 39 of 52 G were in relief, not "two-thirds". It was never corrected, so there is only one version of the card.
The #176 "Bakep" error: the back header reads "EUGENF W. BAKEP," the whole name garbled on the printing plate. It is the ONLY error Topps corrected in 1957, which is why the error back carries the premium — a PSA population near 215, topping out at PSA 8.
About Tom Gorman
A New York City native, Tom Gorman signed with the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1946 and debuted on July 16, 1952, going 6-2 down the stretch for a pennant winner. The right-hander pitched in both the 1952 and 1953 World Series — 3⅔ innings in all — collecting championship rings each October. On March 30, 1955, New York sold Gorman, Ewell Blackwell, and Dick Kryhoski to Kansas City for $50,000, and he promptly posted 18 saves, second in the American League, in the Athletics' first Kansas City season. By 1956 he was a swingman, making 13 starts among 52 appearances — a split this card's back famously fumbles, claiming two-thirds of those games came in relief when the true count was 39. Gorman went 36-36 with a 3.77 ERA and 42 saves over eight seasons before his final game in June 1959, and died in Valley Stream, New York, in 1992.
