Uncorrected error: Born in '29, not '32 It was never corrected, so there is only one version of the card.
The #176 "Bakep" error: the back header reads "EUGENF W. BAKEP," the whole name garbled on the printing plate. It is the ONLY error Topps corrected in 1957, which is why the error back carries the premium — a PSA population near 215, topping out at PSA 8.
About Hector Lopez
Héctor Headley López Swainson (1929–2022) came out of Colón, Panama, starred for St-Hyacinthe in Canada's Provincial League, and joined the Athletics organization, debuting with Kansas City on May 12, 1955 as their regular third baseman. On June 26, 1958, he homered three times against Washington — each off a different pitcher, the last a game-winning two-run shot in the 12th. Traded with Ralph Terry to the Yankees on May 26, 1959, López played on five straight pennant winners (1960–64) and two champions (1961–62); filling in for an injured Mickey Mantle in the 1961 World Series, he hit .333 with seven RBIs, driving in five in the Game 5 clincher with a homer and a triple. "Hector the Hit Collector" — a tag credited to writer George Vecsey — finished at .269 with 1,251 hits and 136 homers, then made history in 1969 as Triple-A's first Black manager with Buffalo. This card carries an uncorrected error: it lists his birth year as 1932, three years after his actual 1929 birth.
