About Billy Hunter
The Brooklyn Dodgers signed Gordon "Billy" Hunter in 1948, seeing the slick-fielding shortstop as a possible successor to Pee Wee Reese. Instead, Bill Veeck paid $95,000 plus three players in October 1952 to make him the St. Louis Browns' highest-priced rookie. As a 1953 rookie Hunter made the AL All-Star team — pinch-running for Mickey Mantle — and preserved Bobo Holloman's May 6 no-hitter with a diving stop and throw from his knees. He moved with the franchise to Baltimore in 1954, went to the Yankees in a 17-player trade that winter, then landed in Kansas City in a multiplayer deal in early 1957 — the club on this card; he hit .191 in 116 games there and finished with Cleveland in 1958, a .219 hitter across 630 games. Hunter later coached third base for the Orioles' 1966 and 1970 World Series champions, managed the Texas Rangers to a 146-108 record in 1977-78, and at his death in 2025 was the last surviving St. Louis Brown.
