Whitey Lockman - 1957 Topps #232
1957 Topps #232 Whitey Lockman

About Whitey Lockman
Carroll "Whitey" Lockman signed with the New York Giants in May 1943 as a 16-year-old for a $1,000 bonus — and the light blond locks he brought to the club earned him his nickname. On July 5, 1945, he homered in his first big-league at-bat, still the youngest player ever to do it. After Army service in the Pacific cost him 1946, he became a fixture at first base and in the outfield, making the 1952 All-Star team. His ninth-inning double off Don Newcombe in the 1951 playoff scored Alvin Dark and brought on Ralph Branca — setting the stage for Bobby Thomson's Shot Heard 'Round the World — and he won a ring in the Giants' 1954 World Series sweep of Cleveland. This card shows him freshly reacquired from St. Louis for Hoyt Wilhelm, back for the Giants' final New York season before the 1958 move to San Francisco. A .279 hitter with 114 homers over 15 seasons, he later managed the Cubs (1972-74) and died in 2009.
