About Art Fowler
Art Fowler signed with the New York Giants organization in 1944 and toiled a full decade in the minors — winning 23 games for Danville in 1945 and leading Southern Association pitchers in games, innings, and ERA for the 1953 Atlanta Crackers — before debuting with Cincinnati on April 17, 1954, at age 31. The rookie went 12-10 with a 3.83 ERA, and this card marks his final Redlegs season: shifted to the bullpen, he was sent down to Seattle in September 1957. He resurfaced with the Dodgers in 1959 and the expansion Los Angeles Angels (1961-64), finishing 54-51 with a 4.03 ERA in 362 games. He and brother Jesse, a 1924 Cardinal, hold the record for the largest age gap between big-league brothers. Fowler's famous second act came as Billy Martin's ever-loyal pitching coach — earning two Yankees World Series rings (1977-78) and tutoring Ron Guidry to the 1978 Cy Young — while insisting, "If running is so important, Jesse Owens would be a 20-game winner."
