1957 Topps #244 Billy Loes

About Billy Loes
A Long Island City kid raised a half-hour from Ebbets Field, Billy Loes signed with Brooklyn in 1949 for a club-record $21,000 bonus and became one of baseball's great eccentrics. He went 50-25 for the Dodgers from 1952-55, pitched in three World Series, and won the 1955 championship — but he's best remembered for predicting the Yankees would beat his own team in the 1952 Series ("I said they'd win it in seven"), then losing a ground ball in the sun in Game 6. He famously claimed he never wanted to be a 20-game winner "because then I'd be expected to do it every year." Sold to Baltimore in May 1956, Loes raced to a 12-5 start in 1957 and earned his lone All-Star selection, throwing three scoreless innings in the game itself — this card catches him in that career-best Oriole summer. He finished 80-63 with a 3.89 ERA across 11 seasons and died in 2010.
