About Enos Slaughter
Enos "Country" Slaughter — the nickname hung on him by minor-league manager Burt Shotton in 1937 for his farm-boy look — signed with the Cardinals organization after a 1936 tryout and reached St. Louis in 1938. A hustling right fielder who famously ran everywhere after a Columbus manager needled him for jogging, he made ten All-Star teams and hit .300 with 2,383 hits across 19 seasons. He led the NL in hits in 1942, drove in a league-best 130 runs in 1946, and authored the "Mad Dash" from first base on Harry Walker's hit to win Game 7 of the 1946 World Series. After three years in the Army Air Corps during World War II and a tearful 1954 trade to New York, he became a valuable Yankees reserve, homering off Roger Craig in the 1956 Series — the era this 1957 Topps card captures in pinstripes. A four-time champion (1942, 1946, 1956, 1958), he entered the Hall of Fame in 1985, and the Cardinals retired his No. 9.
