About Hal Naragon
Harold Richard "Hal" Naragon (1928-2019) was a left-handed-hitting catcher from Barberton, Ohio, who signed with Bill Veeck's Cleveland Indians organization out of an open tryout and began his professional career in 1947 with the Pittsfield Electrics. After a September 1951 debut, he served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War before returning to Cleveland. A steady backup to Jim Hegan, Naragon played for the Indians (1951, 1954-59) and the Washington Senators/Minnesota Twins (1959-62). He was part of the pennant-winning 1954 Indians and caught one inning of Game 3 of the World Series against the New York Giants, who swept Cleveland. His best year came in 1955, when he batted .323 in 57 games; over eight seasons he hit .266 with 87 RBIs in 424 games. He later coached, earning a title as a Detroit bullpen coach in the 1968 World Series. This scarce high-number Series Four card is among the tougher 1957 Topps cards to find.
