About Bill Taylor

Taylor was sold to Detroit on September 14, 1957, and his #389 card, in the fifth series of the 494-card set, pictures him as a Tiger. His 1958 was brief: eight early games, all but one as a pinch hitter, with three hits in eight at-bats for a .375 average. After rosters were trimmed from 28 to 25 in May he went to Charleston.

Bill Taylor was a left-handed outfielder from Alhambra, California, who reached the majors with the New York Giants and finished with the Detroit Tigers, playing 149 games over five seasons from 1954 to 1958. He signed with the Oakland Oaks in 1947 and came to the Giants in 1950. A big man at 6 feet 3 inches, he hit .350 with 22 home runs for Double-A Nashville in 1953. In the majors he batted .237 with seven home runs, and he spent 1954 on the National League champion Giants without appearing in their World Series sweep. Most of his big league games were as a pinch hitter, and he played in the field in only 18. He was far more productive in the minors, where he hit .311 with 186 home runs in 1,261 games through 1961. In winter ball with Magallanes in Venezuela he became the league's first three-homer man in one game and set a season mark with 16 home runs.
