About Gus Zernial

Zernial's 1958 Topps card, #112, sits in the second series and shows him with the Detroit Tigers, who acquired him from Kansas City in a big November 1957 trade. He appeared in 66 games that summer, starting 24 in left field, and hit .323 with five home runs and 23 RBIs in 124 at bats. He also led the American League with 15 pinch hits.

Gus Zernial was a right-handed outfielder from Beaumont, Texas, and one of the most prolific power hitters of the 1950s. After three years in the Navy in World War II, he hit 41 home runs for Burlington in the Carolina League in 1946 and later starred for the Hollywood Stars, where he picked up the nickname Ozark Ike. He reached the White Sox in 1949, then went to the Philadelphia Athletics in a three-team trade in 1951 and led the American League with 33 home runs and all of the majors with 129 runs batted in. He hit a career-high 42 homers in 1953, when he started in left field in the All-Star Game, and stayed with the Athletics when they moved to Kansas City. He finished with Detroit in 1959, with 237 home runs and a .265 average in 1,234 games. Twice he broke a collarbone making diving catches. He was later honored on the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame and is in the Fresno Athletic Hall of Fame.
