1958 Topps #115 Jim Bunning

About Jim Bunning
Jim Bunning (1931-2017) signed with the Detroit Tigers in 1950 and reached the majors in 1955. The right-hander broke out in 1957, going 20-8 and leading the American League in wins. A nine-time All-Star chosen in both leagues, Bunning pitched for the Tigers (1955-63), Philadelphia Phillies (1964-67, 1970-71), Pittsburgh, and Los Angeles. He threw no-hitters in both leagues: one against Boston on July 20, 1958, and a perfect game against the Mets on Father's Day, June 21, 1964-the first perfect game in the National League in 84 years. Bunning led his league in strikeouts three times and retired with 224 wins and 2,855 strikeouts, then second only to Walter Johnson. He never pitched in a World Series. After baseball he entered politics, representing Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives (1987-1999) and the U.S. Senate (1999-2011). He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1996.
