About Irv Noren

Noren spent 1958 as a Cardinals outfielder at age 33. He ran into a wall during spring training and saw less action, hitting .264 with four home runs and 22 RBI in 117 games, only 77 of them in the outfield. His Topps #114 comes from the second series of the set and shows him with St. Louis, sitting between Jerry Walker and Jim Bunning in the numbering.

Irv Noren was a left-handed outfielder and first baseman from Jamestown, New York, who grew up in Pasadena, California, and played 11 major league seasons, 1950 through 1960. He was signed by the Dodgers in 1946, won Texas League and Pacific Coast League MVP honors in 1948 and 1949, and was sold to Washington. He hit .295 with 98 RBI as a 1950 rookie, then was traded to the Yankees in 1952 and became Casey Stengel's valued fourth outfielder, appearing in three World Series. His best year was 1954, when he hit .319 and made the American League All-Star team. He later played for Kansas City, St. Louis, the Cubs and the Dodgers, finishing with a .275 average and 857 hits in 1,093 games. He also played three games in the National Basketball League. Noren later managed in the minors and coached third base for Oakland's 1972 and 1973 champions. He died in 2019.
