About Von McDaniel

McDaniel's 1958 season lasted two games for the St. Louis Cardinals: a rough relief outing on April 18, then a start on May 11 in which he walked five in two innings, his final major league appearance. His Topps card, #65 in the first series, is a rookie card built on his 1957 debut, and it exists in the common white lettering and with his name printed in yellow.

Von McDaniel, born in Hollis, Oklahoma, was a right-handed pitcher who became a sensation at 18 with the St. Louis Cardinals. Days after high school graduation in 1957 he signed for a $50,000 bonus, the same amount his brother Lindy had received, and under the bonus rules had to stay on the big league roster. Nicknamed Mr. Vonderful that summer, he threw a two-hit shutout against the Brooklyn Dodgers in his first start, then a one-hitter against Pittsburgh in which a second-inning double was the only hit. He finished 7-5 with a 3.22 ERA. Then his control vanished without a clear explanation. He appeared in two games in 1958, walked five in two innings, and was sent down, never returning to the majors. He later converted to third base, hit well in Triple-A, and retired after 1966. McDaniel became a farmer, accountant and preacher near Dodson, Texas, and died in 1995 at 56.
