About Del Ennis

Ennis slipped sharply in 1958 with St. Louis, hitting .261 with three homers and 47 RBI in 106 games after driving in 105 runs the year before. The Sporting News reported a family crisis during the season, and he was traded to Cincinnati that October. His Topps #60 is a first-series card that shows him as a Cardinal, and a yellow-name printing carries the same number.

Del Ennis was a Philadelphia-born outfielder who played 14 seasons, 1946 to 1959, mostly as the power bat of the Phillies. He hit .313 as a rookie in 1946, made the All-Star team, and won The Sporting News Rookie Award. He led the National League with 126 RBI in 1950 as the Whiz Kids won the pennant, and had four straight seasons of 20 or more homers and 100 or more RBI from 1952 to 1955. Despite that production he took years of booing from the home fans, which he sometimes answered with game-winning hits. Traded to the Cardinals after 1956, he drove in 105 runs in 1957 and roomed with Stan Musial. He finished with the Reds and White Sox in 1959 with 288 home runs, 1,284 RBI and a .284 average. He ran a bowling alley in the Philadelphia area, which he had opened in 1958 with the Phillies' longtime traveling secretary.
